Note to US Olympic athletes wearing masks

Don't apologize.  If the air is bad, wear those masks.  Maybe some color other than black so you look a little less like the Lone Ranger whose mask has slipped.  But really...what IS the fuss.  Tell me who doesn't think that its possible the air might be bad in Beijing...obviously the Chinese do since they have one half of all cars off the roads each day and they have idled factories and power plants to lessen pollution.  I love Chine.  I've been to Beijing and loved it to.  I know they have tried to do what is necessary to clean up the air.  But when the air is bad it is worse than the worst days in Los Angeles (where I grew up).  So if you think it will effect your performance, where the darn masks and don't apologize to anyone.

By the way...do you know why they are holding the Olympics in August...which can be one of the hottest and smoggiest months? The number eight is a very lucky number in China.  It represents luck and since the 1980s it also represents becoming rich.  So the Olympics are starting on the 8th day of the 8th month of the year 2008.  And the opening ceremonies?  You guessed it...they will begin at 8pm (actually I've heard 8 minutes after 8pm).

And the Chinese take these number things very seriously...someone paid 250,000 for the phone number with all 8s.

So I don't think our guys look so silly with their air purifying masks! do you?
